Digital Activism
Last year on May, a man named George Floyd died of indiscriminate police treatment in Minneapolis and a human rights movement erupted. After this incident, many people were angry and announced it through many SNS such as Instagram and Facebook. Thanks to the rapid online transmission, the incident spread right around the world and led to the human rights movement of the entire United States. According to the article of “Use of the #BlackLivesMatter Surges on Twitter After George Floyd’s Death”, it shows that the hashtag of BlackLivesMatter increased up to about 8.8 million in twitter.
Like this, in my own words, I think online activism is a way to help many people know the injustice of society more quickly and fix it. I think it is closely related to the digital leadership because just like digital leadership, people can share the social problem and make it change.
I think some people may not be brave or think that fighting for society behind the keyboard is not sincere. However, I think spreading social issues online is the most efficient way to inform and fix the world. Without SNS such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, there might not have been a single social issue except for news articles until people around the world knew it. In this digital age, almost everyone often sees social issues through SNS. Therefore, online outline on activism is an efficient means of fixing social problems.
In an era when Corona is spread all over the world and is not going out well, I think online activism is a great help to social problems now. As I said above, announcing the incident through hashtags on Twitter or Instagram or posting one’s thoughts and opinions on social issues can be as powerful a tool as demonstrating on the streets in person.
